On the strength of sizeable sponsorships from the IRS, Thomson Corporation, Microsoft, SAP, Intuit, Surgent McCoy, Advanced Settlements and JobsintheMoney.com, the AICPA’s stable of weekly, bi-weekly and monthly Insider™ e-newsletters reported a 40 percent increase in advertising revenue of 2005, and reach over 200,000 readers each week. The latest CPA Insider™ subscriber study showed that on average, readers read 3.1 out of every four issue, spending nearly 20 minutes per week per issue — that’s over one hour per month.

As marketers start to make advertising commitments commensurate with readers’ time commitment to the online medium, the trend is likely to continue.

In 2007, U.S. marketers will increase their spending on online display advertising by 13.4 percent over 2006 levels — much more than the 2.6 percent ad spend growth forecast for all media, reports TNS Media Intelligence. More than three in four (75.6%) of B2B marketing executives say they plan to increase their online budgets next year, according to BtoB Magazine's 2007 Marketing Priorities and Plans Survey of 569 B2B marketing executives. The survey also found that customer acquisition is the primary marketing goal for 2007 (62.3 percent of survey respondents), followed by brand awareness (19.5 percent) and customer retention (11.0 percent).

“Digital marketing is much more of a large player,” noted Tom Greve, National Advertising Sales Director for the AICPA at a recent podcast the Institute hosted in association with DoubleClick and Bay Street Group Research. “You know, we’re seeing 25 to 35 percent growth in digital every year, and it enables us to be more targeted in our clients’ marketing,” he added.

“When you look at the trending over the past few years, it is certainly trending more toward digital marketing,” says Greve.
