JOFA NEWS: The Power of CPA Influence

In these competitive times, reaching key decision-makers is more important than ever. And, getting the attention of the people who influence the buyer’s decision is essential.

To find out just how strong, the Journal of Accountancy asked more than 300 small-business owners how they perceive and utilize CPAs.

The study, CPAs: Powerful Influencers, conducted by Applied Research Consulting, revealed 97 percent of small-business owners rely on the expertise of CPAs and most of them use the same CPA for their personal taxes.

Yet, more than tax experts, the study exposed CPAs as the most-trusted professional. Top decision-makers at their firms, CPAs are the good judges of value and respected opinion leaders with a strong effect on their clients’ buying decisions.

“Everyone already knows — *or* thinks they know — how important CPAs are to the decision-making process,” said Associate Publisher Karin DeMarco. “But now we know exactly how really true that is. This research is essential for any marketer interested in the CPA channel.”

The compelling study further revealed:

  • Forty percent of small-business owners spoke with their CPA about payroll and HR issues in the last year, while 64 percent plan to in the future
  • More than one-third (34%) of small-business owners sought advice from their CPA about retirement planning in the last year, while 68 percent plan to in the future
  • More than one-third (36%) of small-business owners received CPA counsel on investments in the last year, while almost twice as many (64%) plan to in the future
